Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, he moved to Lakeland in 2003 when he was hired as the Executive Director of the YMCA, Boys & Girls Club and Par 3/First Tee Golf Course. He immediately became involved in the community and embraced all the wonderful opportunities that Lakeland and Polk County have to offer.  

 
His other career adventures include playing football for the Dallas Cowboys, Director of the American Football League (London), and owner of business development and event fundraising company.  

He is lovingly referred to as "Dad" by his son, Derrick, Jr., and "Coach" by the youth he mentors for the Lakeland Gators football organization and the Lakeland Spartans youth basketball travel league.   

Derrick is a member of Lakeland Association of Realtors, Free Life Chapel and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He also helps to feed and serve the homeless as a volunteer through Lighthouse Ministries.
